The Evening Meal Pattern

Evening meals proved more variable in the journal record than breakfasts or lunches. Participants' evening routines differed considerably — some cooked from scratch most nights, others relied on ready-prepared meals or takeaways several times per week. Yet even within this variability, the protein-satiety association held.

On evenings when a substantive protein source was present — chicken, fish, beans, eggs — satisfaction entries were logged more often. On evenings dominated by refined carbohydrates with minimal protein (pasta with cream sauce, bread-heavy meals, rice dishes without a protein component), participants more frequently noted either continued hunger or having eaten beyond comfort.
